Why are there so many Bible translations?

Some Bible translations are based on the most existing old Greek texts (King James) while others are based on the most ancient (earliest) Greek texts (NAS and NIV). Some were translated by one person while others by committees of scholars. The biggest difference is that some are word-for-word literal translations (NAS) while others are dynamic and try to capture the meaning of each sentence (NIV) or even paragraph (Living Bible) in a way that is easiest to understand. If a text said "I went to the Big Apple" I could translate it literally or I could be more understandable by putting "New York". Finally, some books (The Message) are not translations but instead try to enhance the emotional impact of Bible stories.
